Does watching TV make people stupider?
Question by Goodbye: Does watching TV make people stupider?
“A TV screen flashes (or refreshes itself) up to 30 times per second. Interestingly, this speed is the similar to a concentration brain
state. Your brain
gravitates to that rhythm, and you tune into whatever is drawing your attention – forced focus “Entrainment.” So if a light (or TV) flashes at a slow rate, one’s brain
picks up the slow rate and that person feels sleepy. If it flashes at a fast rate, you may feel energized or anxious. If your brain
picks up a concentration flashing rate, you will focus on the TV or computer screen, even though you may not be all interested in what’s on it. Have you ever had the experience of watching TV even though you didn’t want to– the feeling of being mesmerized or compelled to watch, even though you were being with what was on? I have.”
Now with that said….
Here’s my question.
If people watch TV for an extended period of time, do become dumber?
I mean, the beginning, the conflict, and the conclusion of a show is all done and presented for you…
When and how does your brain
work?
Everything is being done for you, mentally.

believe it or no the government uses that technique to control peoples minds.
Interesting question.
I’m of the opinion that watching reality TV makes people more stupid.
That said, this question needs to take into account a lot of things: for example, how are you defining stupidity? Are you talking in terms of IQ which is itself of debateable import?
Is there a known link between concentration span and intelligence?
I have never found myself watching something I didn’t want to watch. At least, I don’t think so. But I tend to only put the TV on if there is something on that I plan to watch anyway.
I understand your theory. Quite simply, the TV refreshes slower then our brain state, so our brain slows down to the speed of the television, Thus overtime, our brains are so accustomed to being “slowed down” that they rarely speed back up to their original speed, thus making people stupider.
Interesting…
i agree with you on certain circumstances
certain shows or movies challenge and exercise the mind
but some shows only appeal to primal and natural emotions, such as suspense, desire, hatred, love etc.
they entertain you by giving you what your mind or body physically craves.
some movies or shows are like an art form, they challenge the mind to question, or to look at things differently. (usually sci-fi for me) most popular media of course only assures the viewer that their idea about culture and society are perfectly normal and right (reality TV)
books can be the same way, but like you said, TV has this strange control over the way our brains process the different flashes of images. Although, you could say that each individual image and sound on a TV can hold just as many instant associations as reading a single word in a book. the difference between TV and reading raises many of it’s own questions of course.
Stupider is not a word.
How much TV do you watch?
